As part of celebrating our strong links with our local church and wider community, the whole school spent time sketching St. Mary Magdalene Church, which sits proudly within our school grounds. This special activity encouraged the children to look closely at a familiar landmark from different perspectives, carefully considering composition, proportion and the architectural details that make our church so distinctive.

Back in the classroom, the children used watercolours to bring their sketches to life, exploring colour, tone and texture to create beautiful final pieces. Through this process, they developed key artistic skills from the National Curriculum, including improving their mastery of drawing and painting techniques, recording observations with increasing accuracy and using a range of materials creatively to express their ideas.

The finished artwork is truly superb and reflects not only the children's artistic talent but also their appreciation of the important role St. Mary Magdalene Church plays within the life of our school. We are looking forward to transforming the paintings into a collection of greetings cards, which will be used to welcome visitors, thank volunteers and supporters, and send messages of appreciation to members of our local community. In doing so, the children's artwork will become a lasting reminder of the strong relationships we cherish between our school, our church and the wider community.

July 2026

Our Year 2 and Year 3 pupils from Owl Class proudly showcased their country dancing skills at the Chewton Mendip Village Fete on Saturday 4th July.

The children have been practising enthusiastically throughout the term, learning three traditional dances: the Oxo Reel, which proved to be quite a challenge, alongside the Pat-a-Cake Polka and the Circassian Circle. Their hard work and perseverance certainly paid off, and they performed two of the dances beautifully at the fete.

It was wonderful to see the children sharing their talents with the wider local community. Set against the stunning backdrop of our St Mary Magdalene Church, their performance was a real highlight of the afternoon. We were incredibly proud of the confidence, enthusiasm and teamwork they demonstrated, and they represented our school brilliantly.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support the event, and the children. Well done, Owl Class!

May 2026

Our Year 2 and 3 pupils in Owl Class hosted collective worship in our church. They confidently retold The Parable of the Sower, reminding us of its important message. They brought the story to life with wonderful masks, headbands, and actions, helping everyone to engage with the meaning of the parable. It was a real joy to watch.

April 2026

As part of our Easter celebrations, we had an Easter hat competition and parade. Many of our pupils took part, making fabulous, interesting and unusual hat creations. The winners included Glastonbury Tor in hat form, a giant papier mache rabbit and a reminder about what Easter means to us. We walked around the village, parading the hats and arrived at our church to find out the winning results. 

February 2026

Buzzard class led Collective Worship in our church as part of Mental Health Week, focusing on the theme of Belonging. The children confidently welcomed everyone and explained that belonging means feeling accepted, noticed and cared for. They shared ideas about how feeling included supports our mental health and wellbeing.

The pupils retold the Bible parable of The Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3–7) through a short drama, with some children dressed as sheep. The story showed how the shepherd notices when one sheep is missing and goes searching for it, reminding us that every individual matters and no one should feel forgotten.

The children linked the story to real life, explaining that sometimes people feel lonely or left out like the lost sheep, and that this can affect mental health. They also connected the message to British Values, highlighting Mutual Respect and Individual Liberty, showing that everyone deserves care, kindness and to be valued as an individual.

Pupils shared practical ways we can help others feel they belong, such as inviting someone to play, checking on those who seem lonely, listening and being kind. The worship ended with a quiet reflection and a prayer, encouraging everyone to look out for those who may need extra support.

It was a thoughtful, engaging and confident presentation that clearly showed our pupils’ understanding of belonging, kindness and community.

January 2026

Our whole school came together during a series of collective worship sessions to write our new school prayer. It focusses on the importance of our school values. The children then illustrated our prayer to display in each of our reflective areas in the classrooms.

December 2025

Our school community came together to listen and participate in our annual KS2 Carol Concert, held in our Church. Woodpecker class and Buzzard class sang beautifully, and the congregation joined in by singing well-known carols, which we used as inspiration for our Eco Art Competition entry at The Bishop's Palace earlier this month.

Buzzard class led our Remembrance Day service in church. Parents and members of the local community joined us for the service and the laying of the wreath around the cenotaph. Robin class made poppy decorations to display in the church.
