Spring 2 has been a wonderfully busy and exciting term for Year 4, packed with creativity, music, science and performances – and it began with a very happy (and relieved) return!
Mrs B was back in class after some time away with a broken wrist. On her very first day back, we jumped straight into something special with the first opera workshop. It was an energetic and inspiring way to begin the term and set the tone for all the learning and fun that followed. After the two fantastic workshops with the opera troupe from Jackdaws Music, we reached our big moment on 25th March, when we took part in The Team Mascot. This fun, football‑themed opera is based on The Daughter of the Regiment by Donizetti. The children worked so hard to learn the music, movements and character, and their effort paid off – it was a performance to be proud of!
In English we created non-fiction reports after reading Buddie's Rainforest Rescue. Then we created our own stories based around the beautiful Starbird with fantastic language transporting us. About the Moonking, Florence wrote; 'He was like a sneaky thief in the shadows of the night.'
Maths has been all around fractions and decimals, and we are really showing our times table knowledge with daily practice for the assessment that is coming up.
Science has involved learning about muscles and skeletons, we even created moving hands!
Our Growing Together afternoon had a science theme. Our classroom was transformed into a testing station to explore air resistance using different designs of paper aeroplanes. We even had a test runway! Some designs were so successful that they glided right out of the classroom door, with flights over 5 metres. It was a brilliant afternoon working together with our families.
Music is a big part of our lives in Woodpeckers, we took to the stage at Soup Lunch, where we performed some of the songs we had been learning in our opera sessions. We finished with our favourite piece, “Chosen Family”. At the Easter Service we sang Power in the Music. We performed a strings concert, and our lessons have really paid off, Year 4 sounded fantastic.
Art has been based on ceramics, we studied Ancient Greek pottery and then designed and made Greek God-inspired plates.
As the weather has turned warmer, we have been delighted to head outside for our handball lessons in PE. Woodpecker Class are developing resilience and team working skills across the curriculum but particularly in our PE sessions.
We also celebrated individual and team achievements this term. We are very proud of Ernest, who organised and ran a cake sale to help raise money for the new sun shelter. What a brilliant example of initiative and generosity! We are also incredibly proud of our cross‑country runners, who showed determination, resilience and fantastic sportsmanship.
Spring 2 has been full of memorable moments, and Year 4 have approached every opportunity with enthusiasm and positivity. We can’t wait to see what the next term brings!
