July 2026
This year's Sports Day certainly kept us on our toes! With exceptionally high temperatures, we adapted our plans to ensure that the event could still go ahead safely while allowing every child to take part and enjoy the experience.
The popular events circuit of sporting activities took place, with each event carefully adapted to reduce the amount of time children spent outdoors in the 29°C sunshine. Parents were still able to join us to cheer the children on, creating a fantastic atmosphere as pupils demonstrated determination, teamwork and resilience across a range of sporting challenges.
In line with the National Curriculum for Physical Education, the activities encouraged children to develop agility, balance and coordination, apply fundamental movement skills in a variety of contexts, and work collaboratively as part of a team. Just as importantly, the children embodied the values of fair play, respect and good sportsmanship throughout the event.
The traditional races were postponed for two weeks until the weather was cooler, allowing them to take place safely as a school event. Each year group proudly wore their team colours and competed in turn, with every child giving their very best effort while enthusiastically supporting their teammates from the sidelines.
After combining the scores from both sporting days, we are delighted to announce that this year's winning team is Green Team! Congratulations to everyone who took part. We were incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, perseverance and encouragement shown by all four teams, reminding us that the true success of Sports Day lies not only in winning, but in taking part, challenging ourselves and celebrating one another's achievements.
July 2026
Throughout the term, the children have built their confidence and competence in the water, developing key skills in line with the National Curriculum for Physical Education. Lessons have focused on becoming more proficient swimmers, using a range of strokes effectively, improving stamina and water confidence, and understanding how to stay safe in and around water. As well as developing physical skills, swimming has encouraged resilience, determination and a willingness to challenge themselves as they worked towards individual goals.
The weather has been wonderfully kind to us this year, enabling us to make the most of our outdoor pool for the majority of the term. Ironically, it was almost too kind during Sports Day and our annual Swimming Gala, when exceptionally high temperatures meant that, in the interests of everyone's safety and wellbeing, we were unable to hold our KS2 swimming gala. Thankfully, we were still able to complete all of our swimming lessons and make full use of our fabulous pool facility over the past couple of months.
We are incredibly proud of the progress every child has made, whether they were taking their first confident strokes or refining their technique. Swimming is such an important part of life at Chewton Mendip Primary School, providing children with skills that will benefit them for years to come while fostering a lifelong enjoyment of being active.
July 2026
Our Year 2 and Year 3 pupils from Owl Class proudly showcased their country dancing skills at the Chewton Mendip Village Fete on Saturday 4th July.
The children have been practising enthusiastically throughout the term, learning three traditional dances: the Oxo Reel, which proved to be quite a challenge, alongside the Pat-a-Cake Polka and the Circassian Circle. Their hard work and perseverance certainly paid off, and they performed two of the dances beautifully at the fete.
It was wonderful to see the children sharing their talents with the wider local community. Set against the stunning backdrop of our St Mary Magdalene Church, their performance was a real highlight of the afternoon. We were incredibly proud of the confidence, enthusiasm and teamwork they demonstrated, and they represented our school brilliantly.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support the event, and the children. Well done, Owl Class!
Millfield's 'Commonwealth Games'
Owl Class had an amazing afternoon at Millfield's 'Commonwealth Games' on June 24th. Firstly, we met some athletes who have represented GB in a range of sports and then as a class we practised a range of football skills before having some matches in 3 teams (one of which named themselves the Irish Cucumbers - due to their green bibs!). Then we split the class in half and did either table tennis or laser run (which is part of modern pentathlon), all of which the children really enjoyed. We finished the afternoon with ice lollies, which were much needed on such a sunny afternoon!
Small Schools County Dynamos Cricket Final 2026!
We made it to the county final for Dynamos cricket and were ready to head down to Wembdon Cricket Club, but unfortunately the event had to be cancelled due to the extreme heat. We will try again next year!
