We have been enjoying seeing signs of spring and getting out into the school grounds more often. In our annual 'Soup Lunch' performance at the village hall we performed 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen and we actually found a bear!
In English we have used Joseph Coelho's book 'Our Tower' as a stimulus for writing poems. It is a picture book that blends a lyrical, rhyming, and poetic narrative with a fantastical, story-driven tale about three children finding magic in their urban environment. We have looked at onomatopoeia, alliteration and repetition and wrote our own poems entitled 'Our School' where we imagined going beyond our familiar building for magical adventures.
We have been working on a range of topics in maths. The Year 2s have been focusing on shape and money whilst the Year 3s have been working on length, perimeter and money. They have particularly enjoyed the practical elements of measurement and have been good at measuring accurately to the nearest millimetre and converting metres, centimetres and millimetres in order to solve perimeter problems.
In science the Year 2s have been comparing animals, including identifying and grouping them, whilst the Year 3s have been learning about animals, including humans, with a particular focus on bones and skeletons. They used card, wool and tape to make models of their own hands complete with moving fingers and thumbs.
Our PSHE focus has been on staying safe and this has included considering road safety, medicines and how to deal with emergency situations, including dialling 999. We were really fortunate to have a visit from two of our local police officers who answered lots of questions and showed us their emergency response vehicle.
We have continued to deepen our understanding of the Easter story in RE and have enjoyed activities such as re-enacting Jesus's entry into Jerusalem by making our own palm leaves and greeting Jesus on his donkey in the school hall! We have read and watched the Easter story on video and talked about whether it is happy or sad or both, discussing how we think the different characters may have felt at various points. We have explored the symbolism of images associated with Easter, particularly new life, and made our own cards using the images.
In PE we have been learning to play handball and tennis and focused on the different skills needed to improve at each game. We have also learnt about the importance of warming up and cooling down and worked on a range of stretches.
