Autumn Days

Autumn Mid-term Update

We've had a very busy start to the new academic year in Owl Class!

In English we have been reading the exciting adventure story 'Rescue on Nim's Island' by Wendy Orr.  We have focused on writing setting and character descriptions as well as writing emails and postcards as if we were there.  We are just beginning to write our very own adventure stories.

In maths the focus has been on place value and we have done a combination of practical and written work, paying particular attention to setting our work out neatly and clearly, so that it is easier to refer back to when we need to check our steps.

Science has been good fun.  The Year 3s have been working with the Year 4s on 'Forces and Space' and have carried out a range of experiments, including with magnets.  They are just beginning to write these up scientifically.  Year 2 have been looking at 'Seasonal Changes', looking at weather and daylight hours and recording data in different ways.

In geography, our unit of work has been 'What is it like here?' and we have been identifying where in the world we live, using Google Earth, aerial photographs and maps to identify features around where we live.  We have also created 'messy maps' of our classroom using classroom objects.

The focus in RE has been on Judaism and in particular, the importance of the Torah.  We learnt about the Simchat Torah celebration and talked about the Ten Commandments and the restful Shabbat period and special Friday night dinner.
